Valid from: 09-08-2007 to: 31-08-2007
UWS is about to launch the UWS Ally Program. This is a formal volunteer network drawn from all staff and students across the University to create a safe and affirming support network for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) members of the UWS community.
As potential Allies are not experts on GLBTIQ issues, personal training will be provided for those who volunteer.
You are encouraged to join the Ally network. Allies are sought from every campus, school and division in the University.

BACKGROUND:
The ALLY Program, originally developed in Canada and the US, has provided an effective mechanism to combat homophobia in many Australian universities including UWA, UQ, ANU, and UNE. By the close of 2007 all universities in WA will have committed to an Ally program.
The ALLY Program is a formal volunteer network of staff and students who can create a safe and affirming support network for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) members of the UWS community.
The Ally Network also aims to forge cultural change, as a response to Incidences of discriminatory and homophobic behaviour which have been reported on UWS campuses.
As potential Allies are not experts on GLBTIQ issues, volunteers will need to undertake a short training course to extend their knowledge and understand the clear boundaries of their role.
An ally is simply any person who is informed about, is sensitive toward and has an understanding of GLBTIQ people and their issues. An ally affirms the experience and rights of GLBTIQ persons and chooses to challenge the homophobic and heterosexist values of others.
Allies are not identified as being heterosexual or GLBTIQ but are representatives of the entire UWS community.
Allies are not counsellors or experts and do not provide this kind of support, but may have information about such services.
The ALLY Program raises awareness of issues related to sexual and gender identity as well as support for the right of all students and staff regardless of sexual orientation and has been shown to provide the best mechanism to combat homophobia and create an environment of mutual respect and dignity.
Homophobic behaviour contributes to higher dropout rates, compromises academic excellence, increases staff turnover and has negative health outcomes for victims.
The Program will be delivered by external consultants from the University of Queensland.
Allies are sought from every campus and from every school and area within the University.
